In the ongoing discussion about a possible return of spectators, the basketball Bundesliga has called for more clarity on the part of politics.
“Of course, health is above all else. But it would be important that reliable framework conditions are gradually created with which one can plan,” said BBL managing director Stefan Holz of the German press agency on Friday.
Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the prime ministers of the federal states agreed on Thursday that major events at which contact tracking and compliance with hygiene regulations is not possible should not take place until at least the end of December 2020. A working group at the level of the chiefs of the state chancelleries is to submit a proposal by the end of October for a uniform approach to spectators at nationwide sporting events.
“There are already enough concepts,” said Holz. You need clarity and you can’t keep moving from month to month, said the BBL managing director. The basketball players want to start their new season on November 6th. Already on 17./18. October is the first preliminary round of the BBL Cup. It is still unclear whether there will be at least a few spectators at these cup games. “That will certainly vary from location to location,” said Holz. The four preliminary round groups will be held in Vechta, Bonn, Weißenfels and Ulm.
Unlike handball and ice hockey, basketball players ended the previous Bundesliga season with a tournament of ten without spectators.
