It is still far from clear when and how the Champions Hockey League 2020/21 can and will take place. Nonetheless, the first round with the four German participants Munich, Mannheim, Straubing and Berlin was drawn on Wednesday evening.
Most of the DEL participants were drawn from demanding opponents in the Champions League draw. EHC Red Bull Munich, which was the first German club to reach the final in 2019, will face Finnish club Ilves Tampere in the first knockout round.
The Straubing Tigers were drawn to Servette Geneva when they participated for the first time on Wednesday evening. The Eisbären Berlin are clear outsiders against the first Champions League winner Lulea HF from Sweden. Only the Adler Mannheim are favorites against Grenoble from France.
Because of the Corona crisis, there is no preliminary round this year, the Champions League should start directly with the knockout round in its seventh edition. However, it is still uncertain under what conditions this is possible. It is also unclear whether it will be possible to play on October 6th and 7th as planned.
The games of the German teams at a glance:
